Lydia Murray has worked for nearly two decades in public service to make local government run better. Since September 2012, she has served as the Chief Information Officer at Cook County. At the County, she oversees a team of more than 100 technologists and a capital budget of over $30 million annually for investment in the County's IT infrastructure.
Prior to joining the County, she was an Associate Principal at the Civic Consulting Alliance working on issues of local government service delivery - primarily focused on strengthening collaboration between the City of Chicago and Cook County.
Lydia served two tours of duty as Deputy Chief of Staff to Mayor Richard Daley working in the areas of technology, process improvement and performance management. In between stints in the Mayor’s office she worked for two years as Chief of Staff for President of the Chicago Transit Authority.
Lydia’s other public service experience includes a role as Director of Charlotte, North Carolina’s Welfare-to-Work program and working for Mayor Rudy Giuliani in New York City in various positions including Director of the Mayor’s Action Center and Assistant Commissioner for Strategic Planning of Housing, Preservation and Development.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in Urban Studies and Political Science from The College of Wooster and a master’s degree in Urban Policy from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University.
Lydia a Board member of SCUPE - a training organization for urban ministers in Chicago and serves as chair of the Local School Council of Newberry Academy, a Chicago Public School. She is an active member at St. Paul United Church of Christ and enjoys attending Cubs games with her husband Tom and two sons, Colin and Zack.
TIS 2012 is about the interplay of technology and government. TIS 2012 is organised by Iyka Enterprises Inc. jointly with Illinois Institute of Technology.
